In August 2026, I had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in a photography master class on Oahu, Hawaii, led by two remarkable photographers: Alan Schaller and Steve McCurry.

Alan Schaller is a London-based photographer known internationally for his distinctive black-and-white street photography. His work combines strong geometry, dramatic light and shadow, and the human element to create images that are both graphic and deeply personal. Steve McCurry is one of the most celebrated documentary photographers of our time, best known for his iconic Afghan Girl portrait and decades of work documenting people, cultures, and the human experience around the world.

The workshop focused primarily on black-and-white photography, challenging us to think differently about light, contrast, composition, shape, and storytelling. Over the course of the master class, we photographed models and everyday life at locations throughout Oahu, from the energy and character of Waikiki Beach to some of the island’s quieter and more scenic settings.

The photographs in this collection reflect my experience of Hawaii through that perspective—less about the color traditionally associated with the islands and more about light, shadow, people, place, and moments that tell a story.
